This course will provide an overview of how the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program can create homeownership opportunities on tribal lands. We’ll start with what special homeownership-related factors to consider when applying for the LIHTC funding and then discuss what policies and procedures tribes across the country have found helpful to implement in their LIHTC homeownership project. Finally, we’ll take participants through the conversion process and show methods of how the units can be transferred to homeowners after Year 15, highlighting successful tribal developers who have experienced the process.
Because LIHTC housing units are rental units for the first 15 years, tribes and tribal housing authorities across the country have found that this program allows residents to grow into homeownership responsibilities. This course is designed to show participants:
- The path from concept
- Successful funding
- Planning for the conversion in Year 15
