Oweesta Native Community Development Finance Fundamentals Week (CDFI)

The Seminole Tribe of Florida Native Learning Center and First Nations Oweesta Corporation are partnering together to present a four-day Fundamentals Week (Intro to the Field) as part of a Native CDFI (Community Development Financial Institutions) practitioner certification training at Native Learning Center in Hollywood, Florida. The objective is to orient Native CDFI practitioners to the Native CDFI field and help them understand more about different aspects of Native CDFI operations. This Fundamentals Week will help them become certified Native CDFI practitioners and strengthen their work in their organizations and Tribal communities.

Anticipated Training Agenda

Day 1 – Discussion/Orientation Day

  • History of CDFI industry with focus on Native CDFI industry (unique opportunities/challenges) + discussion on theory of change/mission driven organizations and what that means
  • Robust CDFI 101/Products & Services
  • Discuss sustainability, growth, scale, organizational models & importance of strategic planning

Day 2 – Evaluation of CDFIs, Capitalization & Policy

  • Basic financial management
  • Calculate key ratios and discuss importance
  • Discuss capitalization and capitalization strategies
  • Public policy – at local level & working with Tribal Council

Day 3 – Impact Measures & Evaluation, Development Services, and Marketing

  • Discuss importance of impact measures and evaluation/OTIS
  • Discuss state of Native CDFI industry in relation to this topic
  • Development Services overview & importance to mission
  • Discuss importance of marketing and strategies

Day 4 – Loan Policies, Procedures, and Guidelines

  • Best practices for policies, procedures, and guidelines, and why they’re important
  • Client Management Process
  • Wrap Up – Lessons Learned

The Native CDFI Practitioner Certification Training will be held at the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Native Learning Center located at 6363 Taft Street, Hollywood, Florida. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. The training is tuition-free, however we do ask that if you register and are unable to make it please call 954-985-2315 to cancel (this will assist us in our breakfast and lunch orders).

  • Lanalle is a member of the Navajo Tribe and highly skilled in management, housing development, Community Financial Development Financial Institutions, quality assurance, fundraising, program development, public housing and facilitation and training. Lanalle was previously employed with the Navajo Partnership for Housing, Inc. a non-profit native Community Development Financial Institution, for fourteen years with seven years as Executive Director.
