EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home was updated and reissued in July 2018. The revised guidance includes major changes in recommendations for central system filter efficiency and new guidance for assessing the effectiveness of portable air filters. Modern portable units can be effective for filtering the small particles of greatest health concern (PM2.5). These may be useful in homes at risk from wildfire smoke or homes equipped with wall-mounted mini-split cooling units that typically are not well-suited to remove fine particles.
